Courses

We are justifiably proud of all our courses.  They are tailored to the needs of delegates and extremely focused on the practical requirements of lowland vulnerable missing person search.
All our courses are run over a weekend with a Friday night start, finishing at approximately 1600 on Sunday.   Where relevant, they adhere to the specifications set by the Association of Lowland Search and Rescue (ALSAR).
Everything we deliver is compliant with the ACPO guidelines and the finding of the US Coastguard Sweep Width research report findings.
During all our courses delegates have access to an ever growing collection of around 1500 case studies of UK missing person incidents.

Lowland Search Technician
The entry level course for members of ALSAR teams.  Delegates will acquire knowledge and skills and above all attitudes that will equip them to take their place in a lowland vulnerable missing person search.

Lowland Search Team Leader
Team Leaders are the crucial link between the Search Management team and the searchers.  This course focuses on the essential skills needed to carry out this vital function.  Instructors on this course are some of the most experienced lowland search team leaders in the country.

Lowland Search Controller
The renowned UKLSI Search Controller course is used by many ALSAR and other teams, and also attended by Police Search Advisors.  The course delivers the best in current techniques, and focuses on teaching participants to plan a vulnerable missing person search.  Instructors on this course are highly experienced search managers who have a wide background in training and research.

Missing Person Behaviour
UKLSI is delighted to have two licensed DBS SAR Lost Person Behaviour trainers.  Steve Upton and Elaine Wakefield are both experienced Search Managers and UKLSI trainers, and are licensed to deliver Robert Koester’s acclaimed course in the UK.  The course is based around Koester’s book, “Lost Person Behaviour”, and focuses on how the study of Lost Person Behaviour can inform searches.
The course is focused on the requirements of those involved in the search for missing persons in lowland UK.  It is suitable for anyone involved in any way in this process, at any level.

National Navigation Award Scheme
UKLSI is a licensed operator of the National Navigation Award Scheme.  We deliver courses at the Bronze and Silver levels.  In our opinion it is essential that we have good navigators, and that we have evidence of their ability.  Many of the UKLSI training team hold the NNAS Gold Award.  ALSAR accepts the NNAS as an appropriate assessment of navigational ability.  The course gives delegates the opportunity to spend time in the outdoors in groups typically of three or four, developing their skills.  Courses are tailored to individual requirements enabling the very best instruction.

Shadowhawk Tracking
The best searchers are those trained as trackers.  UKLSI works in partnership with the world renowned Ian Maxwell of the Shadowhawk Tracker School to provide a course tailored to the needs of Lowland Search in the UK.  The same course is delivered to a number of UK Police Forces.  Our courses guarantee personal instruction from Ian Maxwell.
