Types of bike suitable for use in SAR operations – Theory & practical

In this unit we will discuss the different types of Bikes available and the suitability of these for use in search. We will look at different frame systems, suspension systems and brake systems.

Different types of tyres will also be covered in this unit in order to outline the advantages and disadvantages of road v off road tyres.

Handling a bike safely at slow speed requires a certain level of skill and concentration. Whilst we will not be teaching this skill we will get participants to demonstrate their ability in this area and advise of any problems that we can immediately rectify

Dealing with obstacles - Practical

The application of certain formations, relevant to the search area. How effective sweep width can be obtained by the use of searchers carrying out the taskings given by their team leader.

Navigation- Practical

The need for accurate navigational information to be given both to the bike team and by the bike team.

Riding in Urban areas - Practical

Riders will be taken around a variety of different urban areas to understand the need to ride safely in busy traffic environments.

Riding in Rural off road environments

Riders will be shown a variety of rural and off road areas so that they understand how changing terrain affects both their riding style and their ability to effectively search those areas.

Exercise

A short search exercise to cover a time of at least 2 hours and over varying terrain. The area used will be consistent with those areas identified as best suited for bike search.
